Alien conspiracy theorists are confident they've caught NASA in the act of covering up the fact that we are not alone in the universe.
A video posted on YouTube yesterday showed how an image of Saturn's moons Dione and Titan, taken by NASA's Cassini orbiter, had been digitally altered before being added to the space agency's Picture of the Day website.
In the video, "DominatorPS3" turned up the brightness levels on the photo to show that a "huge" object can be seen behind the smaller moon, Dione. Clearly visible are brush strokes that show how the rainbow aura of the object has been blacked out.
"More solid proof of NASA/ government cover-ups," DominatorPS3 said. "And this is recent. You can do this yourself!!"
Of course, being the Internet, it didn't take long for the truth to get out there, so to speak. Story continues here: Conspiracy Theorists Confident: Altered Image a NASA Cover-Up - FoxNews.com
Pretty legit and recent (as of yesterday).
Basically, if you didn't bother to read, an editor from NASA poorly covered up a hidden rainbow aura emanating from something behind Saturn's moon Dione which is in turn eclipsing Titan.
The woman who did it claims that it is due to something about Cassini's camera taking crappy photos but basically everyone's calling BS on it.
Btw, video is here: YouTube - NASA Cover-Up - Saturn's moons (Dione and Titan) altered on 10/8/10
Interesting? I think so.

I'm more inclined to believe that it was simply a case of a bad post processing trying to clean up a combination of lens flare and chromatic aberration from a thirteen year old digital camera. If they wanted to truly cover something up, they wouldn't have released the image in the first place.
With the number of armchair astronomers with large telescopes in their backyards, something of that size would have been noticed before. Unless NASA keeps a registry of everyone who has ever purchased a lens of some sort, and bugs each of their homes.
I don't buy it. Each time something strange happens, people jump at it with teeth bared screaming "CONSPIRACY!". As Riles noted, you can't cover up anything in space. It's too public for that. There's astronomers watching the night sky every minute of the day. If anything really did appear, someone a little bit more reputable than a Mr. Noname would have said something. But where is this image, anyway?
As if nasa would bother, and if they did, to get it so wrong is laughable with the imaging equiptment they have, the conspiracy is a load of crap. More evidence really of the nut cases within the human race....... And yet again the worlds independant scientists are silent, erm , because its a load of rubbish.

:agreed A moon-sized object might be visible to amateurs and certainly to the many national observatories.
Keep in mind it was hiding behind Saturn's moon Dione which means it wouldn't be visible to any telescope looking at it, only those behind it...

The moon is orbiting Saturn and Saturn is orbiting Earth, so chances are that if you look long enough you'll see all sides of the moon and any large objects near the moon.
It was on the dark side of the moon (for what we know) and that side is NEVER seen from Earth.

Lets say Earth, Dione and Saturn are all in a straight line. Now you say there is another moon (or moon-sized object) in between Dione and Saturn. If you wait 1/4 of Saturn's orbital period you will be able to see both moons and Saturn lined up from Earth.
In other words, hold 3 fingers in a line and rotate your hand by 90 degrees.
If you're interested in something on the surface hold two fingers in line and rotate your hand by 360 degrees (might have to break a few joints for that). After one rotation you will have seen all sides of the fingers.
If you want to remain hidden behind that moon you'd probably have to orbit it in the opposite direction the moon goes around Saturn at the same speed. There are probably easier hiding places for aliens out there. Same orbit around the sun as Earth but trailing half of a year behind might work.

The danger with hiding behind the sun is that there are a few solar observatories that aren't confined to the L1 point and could pick up a moon sized object. Of course you'd have to assume there is no NASA conspiracy then. I don't know of too many DIY satellites owned by private citizens. =p
