There are SS memorials in Latvia and Estonia. They also have an annual SS veterans parade. Your thoughts? I dont think thats right... http://www.ncsj.org/AuxPages/031902Latvia.shtml http://www.ncsj.org/AuxPages/082404JTA_SS.shtml http://www.tau.ac.il/Anti-Semitism/asw98-9/baltic.html http://www.mosnews.com/news/2005/03/16/latvia.shtml

Well... Those men were fightning against their invader, bolshevik commies. I think they are heroes by that. Well maybe estonians and latvians want to pride their Red Army volunteer traitors too..

Two ways to be a hero for them. Join the Finnish army or SS. Many men did those..

Thoughts belong in books, stupid opinions belong in the Scheisshaus... all the way down the loo.

Ahh.. I can't wait for the military nuts to come in here and start shouting "BUT ZOMFG TEH SS R TEH OMG PWN OF WWII BEST SOLDIERS OF GERMON EMPRE! NOT ALL KILLED TEH JEWZZZZZZ!!1"

And that is where my problem with them lies. No matter in what department of the SS they served, they knew. Yet they joined up with hitler's godforsaken legions of hell anyway.

The SS is a black stain on the darkest pages of history. Burn the monuments to the ground. Every last one of them.

Did they really knew? Many Germans didn't, as whole genocide was somewhat secret, closed operation from outsiders and men at the front knew little about what happened in Germany. Of course they had heard rumours and knew that jews weren't treated well, but what only few knew was that they would be killed.

And like HGen_Snake said, many were forced to join Waffen-SS or transferred from Wehrmacht to get SS-formations into full strenght. Many Latvians & Estonians joined Waffen-SS because they wanted to fight against bolshevism & the Soviet Union and because Waffen-SS was in better position to recruit people than Wehrmacht.

What comes to the SS memorials: at least they are quite controversial.

Exactly. The world is not only black & white. But I think Latvia and Estonia still have a long way to go to cope with their history.

You have to take into consideration JP, that many of these men were brainwashed, at the time of the holocaust, Hitler had been gently applying Anti Semetic propaganda onto the people since 1933. They knew nothing else, they'd been kept away from the rest of the world, there were no other opinions, there was just Hitlers, and you kept quiet about it, and believed it. I've seen interviews of ex-nazi soldiers who say they're not sorry for what they did, because there hatred for the Jews is so great. They joined up for what they thought was right, even if it may be completely wrong by our standards. The soldiers are victims aswell as the Jews, Hitler [and the rest of his ministers] essentially turned 2 communites of people against each other.
