Lighting up while driving would become a crime if legislation proposed by New Jersey Assemblyman John McKeon (D-Essex) makes it into law. Assembly bill 4306 would allow police to issue an extra $250 ticket to a smoking motorist who is pulled over for a primary offense such as speeding

I am all for it! I would LOVE to see those asshats that throw butts out the window get fined. I love NJ :) Sorry smokers, if this passes it's coming to your town :) http://www.thenewspaper.com/news/05/514.asp

its sounds kinda pathetic. if you really hate smoking try and get the whole thing baned. driving while smoking does not affect your driving ability.

Wrong you are. You lose sight of driving while treying to find that lighter etc. Don't lie to yourself, it does affect some peopl's ability to concentrate on driving. The part I hate is when the scumbags throw a lit butt out of the window. Makes me go into a rage when it hits my car and I want to strangle the moron. I hope this passes.

Smoking barely inhibits one's driving skills. Everyone I know lights up at a red light anyway. This is just liberal hippy bullshit. Mack

Ok, so you are speaking for a handfull of people.... I've seen people swerve trying to light up and find their cigs, so you are wrong. What about when they throw it out of the window and it hits someones car? You are ok with that? I am far from liberal and I agree with the bill.

At the point where your legislating within someone's one personal domian, then it is wrong. I see the point with banning it in public areas, but a car is not a public area last time I checked.

I've seen people drinking coffee, putting on make-up, reading a book, eating, talking on their cell phone. How is smoking worse than all those? Should we ban you from eating McDonald's in your car? It's a pointless bill only put into legislation to try and control where they shouldn't. Mack

I gotta agree with mack on this one. It doesn't stop you any more than eating, driving with kids and talking so why not ban those. "Sorry kids no family holiday because you are way too distracting when I drive but I am going to smoke and kill you with second hand smoke" Ban smoking for the deaths not the driving

Dpn't get me started on women and makeup/cellphones while driving. Cell phone use while driving IS banned in NJ. Maybe the car is your domain but when you throw a butt out of the window it becomes littering and a hazzard to other drivers. The way I feel about people who throw lit butts out of the car window cannot be explained here.

believe what you want but the fact remains smoking while driving is a distraction that causes accidents. Idiots who eat while driving are also just that, idiots.

If smokers could keep their filth inside of their car I would have no problem with it, but it seems they can't so I hope this passes and hits them where it hurts. Thier wallet :)

I think smoking should be banned altogether, not because it is a bad habit but because it would be funny watching these white trash people try to defend their nasty habit.
