Everyone has their own beliefs. I would like to believe that we can have civil discussions expressing them, with out trying to tear someone else's viewpoint apart. This is just a gaming forum, but we can still try to understand each other rather than bring each other down.

There's this sort of habit among the religious to sit around and express their ideas and then congratulate each other on how very learned they all are without really doing any critical thinking. That's not discussion, that's advertising and, in the sense of psychological conditioning, positive reinforcement of a behaviour.

Somewhat crassly it's an intellectual circle jerk.

There are vulnerable minds out there, and to allow religion unopposed access to them in that way before they develop enough rationality to defend themselves is wrong. To continue the crass analogy - it's the intellectual equivalent of statutory rape.

If people want to interpret examination of their beliefs as an attack perhaps they shouldn't wander out into a meme-space that has a higher average of rationality than they themselves. By and large that does seem to be how the religious preserve their beliefs - most religious people do not talk about their religion. But I do not see how lowering the prevalence of more rational discourse in the area is conductive to a desirable state of affairs.

No one here attacked Christianity. I just think the majority of us are wishing for an explanation rather than an excuse to get out of the debate.

:Panic:

Why must everything I say be misinterpreted? I'm not suggesting idle discussion. Debate is good. But some (not all) of the posters in some (not all) of the religious threads tend to get a bit over defensive/offensive. I just wanted people to keep that in mind, and be aware of it when they post.

EDIT: Nemmerie, this thread wasn't directed at you. You have the right idea. There are others who do not.

This is why religion shouldn't be discussed on forums. It *always* gets out of hand at some point or another. Like it or not, nobody is ever going to agree and I think that is where the problem lies.

We could all agree to disagree, avoid a lot of conflict and close this forum. Or we can try to talk about more or less controversial topics while following the rules. In my opinion the latter approach is more fun and offers more opportunities to take something away from the discussion.

There is nothing wrong with a heated discussion. It isn't always necessary to arrive at a compromise or to prove your point. You only need to be able to realize that this is only an internet forum and that being angry or getting personal about something written here is ultimately harmful more so to yourself than to anyone else.

It's hardly out of hand. If you want an example of religious debate out of hand go look at the religious thread. This one is doing just fine in terms of keeping it clean. No one is trying to 'agree' by the way, we asked some question we'd like answers to.

Exactly, both of you two. Totes if the past thread I made seems out of hand, you really should look at an atheist or theist forum. That's some crazy shizz. Even the religion thread here has devolved into a horrible mess. That's why I tried to keep the focus narrow. I assumed for the arguments sake that God and Jesus exists, and that the Bible is true. I think by looking at small bit of it, we can avoid it becoming too awful.

Me? I don't think your thread is out of hand at all; I was just expressing an opinion. :nodding:
