To help you get an idea of how you're doing, we all have a rep point system. It is intended to point out an exceptional displays of logic, politeness, or rudeness you may have displayed. However, the rep system is not intended to display disagreement. If you disagree with someone, you post a reply saying "I disagree...", you don't neg rep him. You only do that if he was impolite or whatever. If I handed out neg rep whenever I disagreed with someone, I'd give out a thousand neg points a day. But since I only do that if that person is trolling or flaming, I hardly do it at all - I almost always give green. So have fun arguing politics, but don't go ruining everyone else's day by handing out undeserved neg rep left and right (pun not intended:p ). I am guilty of doing this on occassion, and it is a common mistake. But it is one that should be avoided.

Green or Red...really don't care. In another thread concerning the Pub I've made that clear I hope. I only get hostil when necessary and make the point in the thread, likewise I praise the same.

Neg repping for a disagreement in opinions is stupid, and it has damaged the experience for some members.

I agree. Maybe only the moderators should be allowed to assign these marks that way, if you feel you have wrongly been assigned a bad rep you can inquire about it directly.

No, I don't think so. There is a report button for bad posts. Neg rep should, I think, be there for informing the member of poor behaviour.

A negative post about a guy is more disturbing to him than some red block.

For a regular Pub poster, getting a lot of neg-rep is usually a sign that your arguments were controversial rather than anything else, which is kind of a shame. It undermines the purpose if this forum if you punish somebody merely for voicing their opinion, and doubly undermines it if you didn't even bother to type out a counter-argument to a post you neg-repped. Anybody participating in debates here runs the risk of getting a lot of underserved reputation (positive and negative). I very rarely bother with the rep system at all - I've never neg-repped anyone despite often wanting to - and don't set much store by it most of the time.

Agreed, if a person was just being a fool people would ignore them. Just about all my negative reps were retaliation for posts i had made. If the intended effect is to make me a better poster or to change my ways, it has been a resounding failure. All i do is try and keep it from going in the red, beyond that it is meaningless.
