TheDarkInvader;3387147For a regular Pub poster, getting a lot of neg-rep is usually a sign that your arguments were controversial rather than anything else, which is kind of a shame. It undermines the purpose if this forum if you punish somebody merely for voicing their opinion, and doubly undermines it if you didn't even bother to type out a counter-argument to a post you neg-repped. Anybody participating in debates here runs the risk of getting a lot of underserved reputation (positive and negative). I very rarely bother with the rep system at all - I've never neg-repped anyone despite often wanting to - and don't set much store by it most of the time.

Dido - you’ll get no argument from me on this. If you are going to give positive or negative rep I think you should at least be brave enough to put your user name…I’m sure many of you have gotten neg. rep., but have no idea from whom, what a cowardly thing to do.

I agree completely. And this is why the rep. system was removed back in the day. Everyone's entitle to disagree, but why the negative rep? If you're going to put "lol" in the message because you disagree, at least leave your name!

Neg reps are discouraging. I just got one saying "Subway sucks" with no name of course. People use the neg rep system for fun and games and to get at others without leaving your name. They should make it known who gives all reps....good or bad. This will stop the stupid ones with "No Names" and make people think before they give a neg rep without good cause.

Right, or just don't do it. I've been on here long enough that I think you folks know where I stand on most topics. If I have a problem with you I do it on the thread - that way if I get too carried away the moderators do what they need to keep me and others out of trouble. The rep thing is stupid and all it does it cause animosity. It is a tool that is abused by some who use it to attack you on a more personal level than allowed on the thread...makes you want to hunt people down, which I don't believe is in the spirt of this whole forum anyway.:(

Considering how much I disagree with a large number of people here on just about everything I'm surprised I don't get more red(knock on wood). when I do get them the comment that goes with it is almost always something like:

"childish" "fool" or sometimes simply "lol"

I really don't mind neg rep, but I only request two things. The first is that you only give it when you feel I've been a total asshole. The second is that you explain to my why you think I've been a total asshole so I can maybe not be a total asshole anymore. I'd like to think, however, that I usually don't do anything assholish enough to deserve serious neg rep.

One thing I really respect about you Afterburner...in the past I've gotten both red and green from you with an explaination and a name. When I get anytype of rep from you...I know I deserved it. :)

Machiavelli's Apprentice;3386616To help you get an idea of how you're doing, we all have a rep point system. It is intended to point out an exceptional displays of logic, politeness, or rudeness you may have displayed. However, the rep system is not intended to display disagreement. If you disagree with someone, you post a reply saying "I disagree...", you don't neg rep him. You only do that if he was impolite or whatever. If I handed out neg rep whenever I disagreed with someone, I'd give out a thousand neg points a day. But since I only do that if that person is trolling or flaming, I hardly do it at all - I almost always give green. So have fun arguing politics, but don't go ruining everyone else's day by handing out undeserved neg rep left and right (pun not intended:p ). I am guilty of doing this on occassion, and it is a common mistake. But it is one that should be avoided.

Yes! I've had a couple of people who I won't name neg repping me because they 'disagree with what I'm writing'. SO annoying, and against the spirit of the forums.

Well, gotta say that I have given red reps to people I heavily disagreed with, kind of things that simply make me completely sick. But I usually leave my name on those. But yea, I try to exert restraint.

Edit: And how come my reputation has been disabled?
