During my frustration of XP blue screening on me for the gazillionth time, I thought of a interesting law... have it to where, after 5 years, a program, no matter who wrote it or how revolutionary it was, would be publicly released as open source.... my hope is that this would allow good ol' open source programmers from Linux to take a look at Windows XP, and maybe make a service pack that would seriously fix those emulation issues.... not to mention bring some ol' classic games up to specs with the new graphics cards out (i.e. Halo PC with GOW graphics :naughty: ). 5 years is long enough for profits to be made... right? :deal:

Wow, that's a really awesome idea... (Halo with GOW graphics? Sweet!) Then maybe someone would be able to fix Windows and all EA games! Though I'm pretty sure companies would cry some serious foul over this.

Of course they would.... but after five years, many programs need serious updating and would be if the opportunity would present itself... I'm sure that many ol' games would be instantly worked on when (Emphasis on when, I'm being positive here) the bill is passed...

I do!!! Its a bad idea as people will just simple steal other peoples code, rename it and call it their own. The amount of trouble it would create isn't worth it.

Its a great idea, if it is truly opensource, then it would be illegal to claim it as your own. This would just lead to much better software(xp worked on by linux programmers *Tries to make a petition* *fails to make a petition* :)

It would be a very good idea. Considering the great range of OSS out there all ready, and the really strong communities and development ideas around, it would only be good news for users.

It could be a big help for a nuetral OS, one of which is currently under development, which can run anything (Windows, Mac, Linux, Solaris, etc) on a single OS. Opening up comercial technology to the OSS community would see far more development in all areas.

I think the 5 year limit is very reasonable, but it may not be enough (seeing as many Linux distros have 6-month or less release cycles).

Hmm, might not be exactly what I meant, I read about it some time ago. The closest things around are ReactOS and E/OS.
