I was just wondering, what do you consider to be the origin of religion? Was it created because there really is a higher power out there, or simply because humans need something to comfort them to get them through their lives? Personally (I heard this quote as I was flipping through the channels one day, but it makes sense), I believe, as the program put it, that there must be a higher power out there, because the mind searches for this higher being. We experience hunger because food exists, and we need it, we experience thirst because water exists, and we need that, too. Likewise, we experience a longing for something that would be called 'supernatural' because it exists, and we need it (or an understanding of/relationship with it). I await your comments... :deal:

Not always that is true in all cases... People "need" drugs yet it is not good for you.... People need "acohol" yet it is not good for you.... etc.... So it can go either way when you think of it. The orgin religion began when mankind was smart enough to explore the planet creating "gods" for each interesting idea that comes into their heads. The start of religion was also the start of politics. The orgin dates back since mankind began to speak to each other and name things and items... Were leaders were created amoung clans of men and were they declared other's to worship them... Were they did question the existence of life and death and so on. I mean that is how I see it from what I reasearched but other's may feel diffrently.

Yes, but with drugs and alcohol (sp?) because they introduced them to themselves.

I'm certain I saw a documentary (another one) a couple of years ago that claimed there was a specific part of the human brain dedicated to relgious experience. I don't have any links or such yet but I'll have a look around and if I find any I'll post them up.

The point here is not wether or not they are good or bad for you, but wether or not they exist. You can't want or need something that doesn't (to your knowledge) exist.

religion began because man could not explain everything. man wants to understand everything, so they create theories as to why something is happening. several thousand years ago, when tehre was no science, people just called stuff like thunder the "wrath of the gods" etc.

I think religion is bullshit, saying we need it is bullshit too.

Will persoally i believe we do need religion. Wether your a Muslim, Mormon, Jew, Christian, or Cathlic the fact is it gives people hope that there's more to life than the crap we deal with, Even if it means being reincarnated to do better in this crappy place. It gives people a positive outlook on life.

And i think religions origins are as old as adam and eve thats where it all began. Even though they were cut off from god they still believed him faithfully (im no bible scholar but its the jest of it) which is where religion started. I think. And btw i dont really believe in a religion instead i consider it more of a relationship with god.

Hey thats my 10 cents argue or agree its just an opinion and its not very easy to change someones opinion :lookaround:
