As for the lend lease comments earlier...

US supplied Russia with 2,000 locomotives and 11,500 rail cars which accounted for virtually all Soviet rail equipment. Russian locomotive production was 92 engines.

US sent almost 19,000 aircraft which accounted for almost 20% of the Red Air Force.

The Red Army ran on US supplied lubricants and flew on US supplied aviation fuel.

By 1945 2/3 of all supply trucks used by Red Army were GM and Studebaker trucks made in the USA. 151,000 1.5 ton trucks, 200,000 2.5 ton trucks, 77,000 jeeps

The US also sent almost 3300 Shermans, 1300 M3 Stuarts, 52 M10 GMC, and over 13,000 artillery pieces.

The Finnish Buffalo's were so modified as to be little more than the original airframe. The Finnish Buffalo's received new more powerful engines taken from Civilian DC-3's provided by Sweden since Finland could not legally outright buy the engines. The engines were mounted on new lengthened motor mounts which greatly effected the weight balance for the better. The aircraft were stripped of everything non essential and anything that could be removed from the wings was taken out to reduce wing loading. The result was a short stubby fighter with many of the same characteristics of the Japanese Zero. Similar weight and power to weight ratio and wing loading.

The Finns also added a excellent reflective gunsight and mounted the guns in the cowling and not in the wings to further reduce wing loading. The guns were also 3 and eventually 4 12.7mm HMG's.

Add to this the flying ability of combat experienced Finnish pilots defending their homeland with great tenacity.

The USN AND USMC model 339 Buffalo's had a couple thousand pounds weight added (to the point that landing gear failures became a problem due to being so overweight) and then acted surprised when it was outperformed in combat when flown by inexperienced pilots flying against combat experienced Japanese pilots flying Zeros.

The Brits and Dutch flying Buffalo's in Singapore and Java faired better but were still overwhelmed and eventually annihilated by the model 21 Zero's and Ki-43 Hayabusa army fighters flown by pilots with combat experience flying in China.

This might be tasteless though I found it humorous:

Brilliant!

EDIT: Read the comments. Some of them are hilarious

BBC News - Pakistan bombings: Taliban admits Shabqadar attacks

There's been a terrorist attack in northwest pakistan at a paramilitary academy of the frontier constabulary. At least 80 dead and 120 wounded. The Pakistan Taliban has claimed responsibility, claiming it to be revenge for the death of bin laden. It was inevitable.

Odd. They're punishing Pakistan for the actions of the USA/not properly protecting Bin Laden? The US military might be concerned with the death of 80 Pakistani police, but that's not something that most American citizens will get teary eyed over, simply due to a lack of interest.

Pakistan has been fighting terrorists for the last couple of years in operations that were much bigger than western media gave it credit for. For Al Qaeda it makes sense to attack the Pakistani government as it cooperated with the big devil. Some cooperation between Pakistan and the US in the raid on Osama was also likely.

Seems to be a complex situation there with elements of the military or intelligence supporting terrorists while the government fights them. There is probably also a shift in acceptance depending on where the terrorists operate. Islamists at the border of India are a-ok with Paksitan, but Islamsits at the border with Afghanistan are not worth the trouble.

Now for a bit of humor.

Allegedly a large stash of pornography was found in the compound.

Wait, as in only six fleshlights for the entire STS/DEVGRU organization? I mean, there's tons of jokes about the Navy, but I think that maybe a few more would be handy.

I now have this mental image of a Fleshlight stamped with a serial number, and the possessor of said Fleshlight holding it at port arms in front of him, repeating the lines

Fleshlight Owner's CreedThis is my Fleshlight. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My Fleshlight is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life...

I was at Safeway today and one of the National Enquirer deadlines was: "Bin Laden still alive.... We have him." I was all like, What the fuck?
