Seriously, they are way overreacting. I'm a Christian myself, but I'd never force/try to force my beliefs on anyone. That's pretty hysterical.

People like this make me feel sick to my stomach. "Oh noes, our child doesn't want to be religious! FBI! FBI!" Seriously? I, too, believed that God was supposed to be a source of inspiration, rather than an excuse to have total control over one party or another.

AfterburnerSociety also tells you how to act, and punishes you (really punishes you) if you don't act the way they want you to... what makes religion so much worse?

Is this a serious question? War is an "extension" of society as much, as is poverty, illiteracy, environmental destruction, etc. The whole point of progress is to leave behind the bad extensions of society in favor of the good ones. "Society" punishes you for breaking clearly defined laws that are created and enforced by society itself. Religion promises you eternal suffering after death for not obeying the laws of a volume of ancient desert scribblings. Nobody on the ground has any control over the tenets or edicts of religions, they cannot argue with them or change them; the laws are completely arbitrary, and therefore they are dictatorial. Religion by its nature is totalitarian and tyrannical, society need not be.

Religious laws can be changed in some cases. That's why there are popes. Even when it can't be changed people will change their perception of religious laws however they want. For example: If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Once meant: Kill all gays. They're witches!!

Now means: Fuck those Homos!! They can't get married. That's our thing.

That's lax following of orders, not changing the commands. Strictly speaking Christians should still be going around killing all homosexuals or whatever else their little manual says. But they can't now, because society is starting to tell religion to "fuck off and die", so to speak.
