"Sea kittens" is the new term being used by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, for the creatures they believe are in dire need of an image makeover: fish.

"PETA thought that by renaming fish sea kittens, compassionate people who would never dream of hurting a dog or a cat might extend that sympathy to fish, or sea kittens," PETA campaign coordinator Ashley Byrne says.

Byrne says that rebranding fish as sea kittens was obvious. "Fish not only have the same ability to feel pain as a dog or a cat, but they also communicate with one another," she says. "They have complex social interactions; they form bonds; they express affection by gently rubbing against one another."

The PETA campaign boasts a colorful, interactive Web site aimed at children and their parents. It offers sea kitten bedtime stories and a design-your-own sea kitten in hopes it will build compassion in families. "Most parents would never dream of spending a weekend torturing kittens for fun with their families, but hooking a sea kitten through the mouth and dragging her through the water is the same as hooking a kitten through the mouth and dragging her behind your car," Byrne says.

PETA is getting more ridiculous with each day. Not only do I dislike them with a passion, I now laugh at them heartily.

Thoughts?

The method seems stupid (I'd think movies like finding Nemo are much better for this purpose) but the goal seems ok. Causing less pain to animals seems like a good motive to me.

Because anyone is going to actually start calling them Sea-Kittens.

I don't like fish, but I'm going to go catch and eat some later, just for PETA.

Sure good intentions are great. The problem starts when a bunch of well funded morons like PETA start trying to do something about them.

Preventing owners from beating their dogs or grossly mistreating chickens is one thing. Calling fish Sea-Kittens for an unspecified reason. Fucking ridiculous.

How is fishing any more painful for the fish than catching them with spears like primitive human beings, or more painful than a wolf killing a deer which is totally natural? PETA once had a good message, but they've lost their respectability by forgetting the most important thing: the natural order. The circle of life involves pain by its very nature, and PETA -- or anyone else for that matter -- has no standing to try and change the way the world works.

There's a difference between catching a fish for lunch and torturing an animal. They need to remember the difference.

I like my sea kittens, covered in delicious batter, drowned in skin blistering oil and served all moist and lovely on a bed of lettuce meat leaves with a side of potato fingers and tomato blood.

Sea Kittens: How do you eat yours? =p

PETA seems like a bunch of fanatics, but I don't really mind if they want to give other names to fish. They could do worse things with their money.

This could be the dumbest fucking thing PETA has ever done, but I really haven't looked into PETA's archives because I could give less of a shit about them. You know your organization's legitimacy has been tarnished when you start flinging around the name "Sea-kittens" for fish and half of your videos on youtube are just naked girls. Seriously, just look at their videos on youtube about half of them are nude photoshoots that are designed to draw people in, instead of actually conveying a message.

First off I hate PETA

Second, I like watching fish in tanks not on hooks(me personally).

Renaming them to sea kittens is stupid... Fish are just that... Fish.

While I hate that fishermen catch the fish and then let it go(putting the fish though hell) , I'm not against catching fish to eating them.

Edit: I also think it's stupid that the majority of these PETA members get so upset over one animal dieing yet most of them support abortion
