This is how i would frame it ''If we accept that people have the right to own animals - whether pets, farm animals or working animals then they have a responsibility to look after them. If we don't look after them properly then we should lose that right.''

Right? Well, I'm not sure it's a right, but it seems to work out OK for all parties involved, in the majority of cases. Especially for pets, they get a pretty sweet life in exchange for being (normally) an affection-sponge.

This. From a practical point of view handing every animal rights similar to those we enjoy might be problematic. Although lawyers would probably like the idea (potential customer increase by several orders of magnitude!).

What, property in the sense of you can do whatever you like to them without violating local precepts? No, that seems like a fairly bad idea. Mainly because some of them look kinda cute.

Cute animals already have basic welfare rights, torture is not permitted and neglect is punishable. They're still property, but property that must be maintained in what is deemed an ethical manner (unless they're ugly or not a mammal).

I view it more as coexisting. My dog loves me and is loyal to me therefore I don't view my ownership of him as "slavery"

Maybe from your view. But from his, who knows? Maybe he shows you fake affection because he thinks you'll beat him if he does otherwise. Emotions aren't hard to fake if you do it enough.
