We don't have proms here, there is a "gala avond" (gala night), basically all those in their last year of highschool are invited to come to some disco that that the school has rented for the evening. Lots of music, booze etc. Basically the same as any party except that all the strangers you see are attending the same school and the age differences are smaller. We had more fun drinkig in the park and messing around then the whole evening in the disco. It was alright. I suppose it would have been more fun for those who got laid. Though I bet that the sex for those who did, wasn't too great either. You can have more fun when going out with your mates and classmates and making your own plan/schedule...

Mr. Matt;5507130Huh, I thought it was only in certain states. Well that sucks - kids will have to blag their way into bars for a whole three years longer!

Some bars in college towns don't even bother really checking the ID any more.

States used to set their own drinking ages. However, in 1984 the federal government passed an act saying 21 was the minimum drinking age. To get the states on board (because it isn't Constitutional to mandate) they threatened to withhold federal highway aid, which the Supreme Court ruled they do have the right to do.

However, private consumption is still left up to the states, some states followed the law all the way through, some states, like California allow private consumption with parental supervision and others still have unrestricted private consumption.

Getting back to the original topic (:p): Round my area, "Abiball" and "Abiturvergabe" (graduation ball and graduation ceremony) are rolled into one... oddly, although it's call "AbiBALL", there was no actual dancing involved... which was sort of strange. :lookaround: But still, the essence appears to be the same in quite some countries (drinking...). Wasn't that pleasant for everyone though (having to report for duty due to conscription the day after your graduation party was kind of mean... luckily, I didn't have to). Anyway, we walked up to the stage in pairs and drew lots before so there wouldn't be any of this "Who are you walking up with?"-hysteria going on...

I skipped my prom and my girl and I went to Disneyland instead. Had a much better time and still had a hotel room to ourselves.

Well I just had my prom, or should I call it ball. Now I must say that I enjoyed this immensely! 10 of us, 5 men 5 women (If you can call us that), had pre-drinks at one of the ladies. After that we were escorted to the mingle.

Around 400 dressed to the max-persons around a ring-fence with a fountain in the middle on a sunny day. It was simply perfect. We had a bit of champagne with a lot of mingling and photography. I would guess around 2000 persons were standing around the inclosure to see us.

We proceeded in to the great hall where we sat down to eat a gourmet meal with funny speeches and good wine and food. After that we were invited to punch and coffee while they removed the tables in the great hall for waltz. We danced until the clock struck 00:00. The evening proceeded with a more of a night club sense, and people were dancing in their 1000$ dresses and tuxedos, with a drink in their hand and the energy at top.

At 06:00 we had a perfect ending to a perfect day with breakfast at the nicest hotel in town.

Prom was a big deal for me, and I enjoyed it incredibly. I do feel pity for the people who has missed such a glorious evening.

Damn, that blows. How come you can't provide your own transportation and why assigned seats?
