Racism. Just curious to see how far is to far for some of you.

Personally, I'm hispanic, male, 15. My parents are from America, but my grandparents are from Mexico.

I joke with my black friends about black people, and they do the same with me about Mexicans and we're both really cool about it. I joke with my Mexican family about Mexican stuff and we're all cool with it and laugh about it cause most of the statements are true.

I have a couple friends that take racism seriously though and get all but hurt if you make racist jokes or comments. However, I leave them alone and conduct myself in a proper way when around them.

Now... The kind of bad racism.

Discrimination.

The way the Nazis did it.

E.G. Other races don't deserve to live. Black people aren't human. Interracial bathrooms. etc.

That is the kind of racism I am against 100%.

I made this topic to discuss everyone's opinion on both kinds of racism. I'm just curious. Let me hear what y'all have to say.

The way I see it, true racism is a bad thing. Very bad, some of the worst. On the other hand, I think some people are just way too sensitive, and should probably learn to develop a sense of humor.

I go to university in the middle of the city, where a lot of black people live. I listen to all sorts of music, and sometimes this includes hip-hop/rap. I've gotten called out and yelled at for listening to "black music" because I "have no idea what it's really all about". Excuse me? I'm sorry I want to listen to A Tribe Called Quest because I like the chill beats...I really didn't know a semester of black history classes was a prerequisite for listening to music!

Racial discrimination is only natural, indeed discrimination in general is just part of how humans are wired up to work - by equating that which is not equal, by seeing things on the level of generalities. If most of the black people you meet try to take a swing at you it's a bad idea for you to trust black people.

Unjustified racial discrimination on the other hand is when you take that and fix it against overwhelming evidence to the contrary. That's irrational, harmful both to others and yourself, and by those virtues 'bad.'

Discrimination is a part of human nature. It's kind of the reason why we're all still alive today, because we form first impressions that generalize very well to a whole class of objects from one or two small samples based on superficial features.

I think it's kind of useless to claim that everyone is equal, because we're not. Just like there are very large physiological and psychological differences between males and females, there are similar differences between different races. However, I think that these differences should be celebrated as contributing to a huge pool of genetic and cultural diversity; it is what makes us great.

Discrimination based on race is, I think, so pointless. There are heaps of better ways we could discriminate people that could be far more useful for general society.

Where I come from I (and others) feel this country is the most reversed racist place in the world.

It doesn't even need to be "most", it just needs to stand out in your mind more than a white guy taking a swing at you. Sure, it might not make you think "segregation now, segregation forever!" or something like that, but it is going to make you more wary about unknown people of that group. Of course, the rub is that if someone looks different from you, they already stand out in your mind, even if they weren't throwing punches.

Racism isn't a good thing, but "my tribe yay, your tribe boo" has been a pretty central part of human societies for quite some time. It's going to take a lot of work if we want to overcome that.

I'm Nordic, German, Black and Cherokee so my options for racism are few. Therefore I personally believe racism is the funniest, most pathetic thing that ever existed. So long as it doesn't keep anyone down or cause any violence, I don't think it's something you can directly fix, save for recognizing how pathetic and naive racists are.

To the OP: Would this have anything to do with you being called a racist?

My ancestors liked to f'ck...I have a lot in me (primarily French, Irish and Shasta) but I'm sure if they digged deep enough they'd find quite a bit. Besides, I find if you hate everyone equally than you don't have to apologize if you offend someone - I'm an equal opportunity hater.
