Russia confirms Iran missile deal _41091158_missileap203body.jpg Iran's military muscle worries the US and Israel Russia has confirmed a deal to sell surface-to-air missiles to Iran, insisting they are for defence only. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov said a contract to deliver TOR-M1 missiles to Iran had been signed. He said the deal "in no way upsets the balance of forces in the region," Russian news agencies reported. Iran has reportedly agreed to buy 29 of the mobile air defence systems in a contract worth more than $700m (£400m; 600m euros). The BBC's Steve Rosenberg in Moscow says the sale is not banned under any treaty, but it has already been criticised by the United States and Israel. Earlier, Iran announced that it was planning to build a second nuclear power plant in the south of the country, despite coming under pressure from the international community over its nuclear ambitions. Iran has previously said it wants to build 20 nuclear power stations in as many years. Earlier this year the Russian government faced criticism from the West when Moscow agreed to sell missile systems to Syria.

SOURCE I doubt that Russia made a clever move by delivering weapons that should act as a deterrent against the USA. Even if Iran has the right to defend itself. I think this weapon deal will spoil the relations between Russia and the USA once more. But who could resist $700m...

Uh oh.. I bet Bush is going to call Putin about this one..

I dont dissaprove of the deal personally tho, Iran has the right to defend itself, and even if it would tip the balance of power in the region in their advantage, they wouldnt be stupid enough to go on the offensive against anyone.. The US would send some cruise missles their way in a heartbeat.

They could have sold worse things to Iran. Those missiles are really only useful for defence and I guess Iran has reason enough to be worried about the US and Israel.

Doesn't really matter. They can't stop crusie missles, B2s, F22s, or F117s. I think its a good deal, they waste 700 mil on something that can't even defened them. They could have used it towards buliding that new reactor they want instead, but they picked harmless missles.

If they are smart they will hide them in the city's, once the US is done with the "shock and awe part", drive them out and pwn those non stealth planes.

Harmless? You have no clue what you're talking about. The TOR-M1 have a kill probability of 95%. AH-64's, Blackhawks, F-16's on CAS missions and A-10's will rain from the sky. You don't win wars with F117's.

And actually it can stop cruise missiles.

The missile is also effective against precision guided weapons and cruise missiles. In tests the missile demonstrated kill probability of such targets ranging from 0.6 to 0.9. tor-gr.jpg

It will make things more difficult for an invader, or someone who tries to blow up nuclear powerplants (like Israel). Apparently this TOR-unit is also effective against guided weapons.

Its only medium to low level. Send some planes at 55,000 feet. I doubt they can hit a bomb traveling at several hundred miles and hour at nearly 90 degress though.

There are only 29 of the systems being delivered. We have good jamming systems so if we have to go out and bash heads in Iran we should be able to get rid of most of them just by letting them fire, get jammeed, and miss.

Those things don't do a thing aganist 20 rangers or navy seals though;)
