New York Times The rig was located just west of where another rig leased by BP blew up and sank this spring, killing 11 people and touching off an environmental calamity. All 13 members of the work crew on board on Thursday were accounted for, the Coast Guard said. News reports said there was smoke rising from the platform, but it was unclear whether the rig was actively burning or in danger of foundering, or whether the explosion had set off any underground oil leaks.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/03/us/03rig.html As of this writing it's eleven minutes old. No word yet on whether it's actually leaking or what, just that it exploded and injured one person. Just have to wait a bit and see... In some research I've done, I've noticed that oil rigs are apparently notorious for cutting corners - hell, cutting whole city blocks - on how to keep costs down. I imagine poor maintenance contributed to this, although it wasn't operating at the time. Not BP this time either....still... Not again... UPDATE: Conflicting stories here. This one is a bit older so it has less info and more speculation. Gulf oil rig explodes off La. coast - Yahoo! So it is an oil rig? On NPR someone said it was neither an oil nor natural gas extraction rig.

Instead of an arbitrary six month closure of a few rigs, the Obama administration should have closed them all until each could be inspected and passed.

Oil rigs are dangerous. They might have done everything according to spec and stuff can still go wrong.

I think by now, people are downright fed up with oil rig accidents. Any news on if this one is leaking?

Are they fed up with oil? It comes with the territory.

The original assement from the Coast Guard was that it was leaking, but they later revised that and said it was not leaking.
