The race to the moon, in the forms of Project Apollo and the still-shadowy Soviet lunarprogram, dominated manned space flight during the decade of the 1960's. In the United States, the project sequence Mercury-Gemini-Apollo succeeded in putting roughly sixty people into space, twelve of them on the moon. Yet, during the late 1950's and early 1960's, the U.S. government sponsored a project that could possibly have placed 150 people, most of them professional scientists, on the moon, and could even have sent expeditions to Mars and Saturn BLAH BLAH BLAH... you could jus go to the website and look there. this is the website I find this VERY intresting.:)

The atmospheric damage such a vehicle would cause makes it impractical.

This is just Project Orion. I have known about this for years. Its finding a new method of drive for space travel. Jet fuel would take forever to get to mars, like a year, and we would like 5 extra ships with more fuel and food, and the extra ships would be discarded along the way.

There are 2 concepts in development: Ion drives, that use concentrated ions for propulsion or the nuclear drives that go off nuclear power.

This is no secret...

I've heard about Orion for a while now, but it seems a little unpracticle, on how to launch of, with out blowing yourself up.

Saturn 5 was basicially a pod strapped to a giant rocket...its the only practical way to get out of orbit right now because we have nothing powerful enough to do it except rockets.
