Wiki says...

Flamethrowers have not been in the U.S. arsenal since 1978, when the Department of Defense unilaterally stopped using them. They have been deemed of questionable effectiveness in today's combat and use of flame weapons is always a public relations issue. They are not banned in any international treaty the U.S. has signed. Thus, the US decision to remove flamethrowers from its arsenal is entirely voluntary.

To best of my knowledge the flamethrower was replaced in the US Military by LAW rockets with white phosphorous warheads that provided a incindeary effect without the need to close to dangerously close range.

Yeah but it still would be cool when the enemy charges at you and you've got an inferno surprise for them.

Napalm weapons were incredibly effective. Read We were Soldiers, all that firepower protecting their flanks was one of the key factors to their survival. And napalm is humanitarian too. A phosphorus round releases a cloud of "felt" wedges that can literally burn right through your arm if they land on you. Unlike napalm, it's a chemical weapon so there's no easy way to stop it from burning (Remember that other scene in We Were Soldiers when the guy was hit by the phosphorus grenade, and they had to cut up his face to stop the burning residue?)

I'd like to see you die slowly while your own skin melts off your own bones and you die from the toxic fumes of your own fucking body and smoke. Thats what a flame thrower does, and napalm is even worse, it sticks to you like glue while on fire. You can't get it off because it is very sticky, infact people who say they would be cool do not have a clue and need to be smacked round the head.

It's not about being cool, it's about being effective.

Exactly what enemy is going to charge you in a modern battlefield? Insurgent cavalry units?

It's partly about effectiveness, and it's partly about image. No military wants to create an image of being cruel, because they need recruits who believe they are fighting for the good guys. This works out well, as flamethrowers simply aren't needed in a modern war.

Fire is in many cases a relatively humanitarian option given the effects of say a gut wound. Lying there with the contents of your guts slipping out through a hole the size of a coin. Yeah real merciful way to go. Or the effects of an explosive strike, lying there with half your body blown away or slit open. Fire isn't the dreadful horror people make it out to be, at least not by comparison to the effects of other weapons we use.

But us being the pure upstanding citizens of all that is good in the world nigh on outlaw such evil things and replace them with phosphor tipped rockets and the air support, (while declaiming the less advanced option as barbarous now that we no longer use it.) Yay us!
