Another article by Spengler. Here he argues that Jihad is to Islam what mass is to Catholics. An essential expression of self sacrifice and faith. http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Front_Page/HI19Aa02.html As usual, the argument seems solid. I can't say I disagree. It would explain why the Jihad is so widespread, and so actively executed.

Jihad = (personal) struggle for betterment. Pity the author was off the mark on tht bit.

So yes, it is an important part of Islam.

Unfortunatly it has a different meaning for a lot of muslims. Jihad to them = converting or killing all "infidels."

Yes, that is the literal meaning of the word. Just like "Crusade" is derived from the word crux (cross)

Pity the author was off the mark on tht bit.

In one statement, you say he was right, but in the other you say he is wrong. Explain?

He was wrong about jihad being just a way of killing yourself for God. He was right about juhad being an important part of Islam.

Indeed, but that's no reason to suggest Islam can never be 'moderate' or peaceful, as the author does.

What I don't understand is: doesn't jihad go against Islam which is supposed to be peaceful? I remember someone talking about it being morally right for muslims to take back their land and all that, but isn't that contradictory?

I'm not an expert on islam so i can't say. I just wish the islamic moderates would do more to counter the radical rhetoric.

Has anyone seen Obsession yet? Supposed to be a good movie on this subject.

I believe that moderates do do and say a lot of anti-extremism stuff, just little of it reaches us. It's not the next shocking story, so the media don't really want to sell it.

Or they refuse to speak out against the extremists due to fear of vengence(i.e. death, torture, or beheadings).

Nope. Mohammed himself said that the faith would be spread by the sword. And he was right. Over the next 200 years the Muslims would subjugage the Middle East, Asia Minor, North Africa, and Spain. An amazing accomplishment - and a bloody one.
