A few pubbers came up with an idea to hold a supervised debate between two members every once in a while, as they are busy with other things now the project was never quite finished, so I'll post what they figured out so far and if anyone's interested in taking it up from here just tell me.

Here is an explanation of the idea with a few rules, made originally by Relander and improved by Locomotor, Chemix2, masked_marsoe and a little bit by me.

Relander

Here's how the organized/supervised debate could go:

Title of this project: "King of the Hill".

1. Two debaters come up with a subject that they disagree about and send their opening statements for debate referee (moderator or super moderator).

2. The referee posts a debate topic introducing its subject combined with debaters' opening statements and also tell the rules, general guidelines of discussion & how other, "outside" forum members should behave.

3. Referee designates which one of the two debaters starts first. After person A has made his first post, the turn switches to person B who makes his first post on which person A responds etc. Depending of the rules, both debaters post 8-12 messages after which the referee closes the debate topic. Then both debaters make their closing statements, send them to the referee who adds them on the closed topic.

4. Then after 16-24 hours (in order to get max. amount of people to read the closing statements as well) the referee makes an open poll where the people vote for the winner of the debate from person A & B and discuss further about the debate subject if they want to.

5. Winner of the debate gets his name on topic (preferably sticky in the Pub, should be room for that) "debater of the month" in the following manner:

debaters of the month

1.Debate - Is war in Iraq justified from USA's point of view? (January 2nd - January 19th 2007)

Winner: Afterburner with 60 % from votes.

2.Debate - Is universal health care possible in the USA? (February 5th - February 17th)

Winner: MrFancypants with 76 % from votes.

etc.

(Potential) Rules:

* All general forum guidelines and the Pub-rules apply * No intentional twisting of words * Questions aren't allowed to be answerred with questions. After answer, a person can make counter-question. * No excessive off topic or derailing of subject * 8-12 replies from each debater plus opening & closing statements * Only debaters and the moderator are allowed to post on the topic, all other posts will be deleted immediately.

some additional info:

* People can vote & discuss about the subject after the debate ends in the same thread. * Anyone can take part on organized debate in which case people should contact whichever member of staff will help out with thisso that people won't randomly make organized topics themselves without moderation.

Each month there would be an organized debate settled, no more than one per month as the concept would quickly suffer from inflation if there would be more debates. The one who would win most debates in a year would get some kind of reward due to "great contribution for the high level discussion".

So as you can see the concept is basically finished, unless someone has suggestions to improve it. What I'd need to know is if anyone is interested in trying this out, if so you can post a "challenge" here which describes the topic you want to talk about and your view on that topic. If you have questions or comments you can of course also post them here or PM me.

Update: Here are the first challenges. First person to accept a challenge will participate in the trial run (together with Colonel Bob who was the first to post a challenge)! PM me or masked_marsoe for accepting a challenge and/or further information. Challenges: Colonel Bob: topic and position: -evolution, in favour of -censorship, against -the legal status of marijuana in the United States, legalize it! -the drinking age being set at 21 years (in the US), lower to 18 -birth control (condoms, the "morning after" pill, etc. etc.), in favour of Silver1Wolf2: topic and position: -gaming pros and cons, position described here adelphospro: topic and position: -abortion, against -Biblical accuracy, for -Child Discipline, For Relander: topic and position: -US/British/Canadian election system, against -US two-chamber congress, against -No-voting, against / voting, for

Well do you think there should be a certain word limit in the responses? In an actuall debate, person to person, usually the two parties will have several mins. to make their case. Since this can't exactly be enforced over the internet maybe responses should be limited to oh 450 to 500 words.

I think the easiest way to do this would be to let the person who makes the challenge decide the word-limit for each post and the number of replies. Or if you like you can make a challenge and then discuss the terms with whoever wants to discuss the topic with you.

Would there be rules for how long you have to reply? People should have time to account for work or any other activities that may come up, but there should probably be some sort of limit so that the thread can't just linger for days on end. But yeah, this sounds like an awesome idea, and I'd be happy to try it out, given the chance. The topics of evolution, political correctness, the legal status of marijuana in the United States, the drinking age being set at 21 years (in the US), and birth control (condoms, the "morning after" pill, etc. etc.) I find especially interesting. For the record, I am: for, against, legalize/decriminalize, lower to 18, and for, respectively, if anyone is possibly interested in doing this. There are other subjects that would probably be interesting, if someone wants to throw them out there.

Yeah, but all those specific things would be adjusted depending on the wishes of the two debators.

Well, I would definitely be open to debating someone, if someone wants to suggest a topic, post it in the thread, and we can see who all is interested and whatnot.

I think that if you want to debate someone, you should issue a challenge (giving topic).

If someone accepts your challenge, then we'll go from there.

:agreed

Post (or PM me) some kind of statement, for example "abortion is wrong and should be abolished" (it should show which topic you want discuss and which position you take), I'll update this thread with your name and this statement in the first post so that others can see which topics are available. If you see a challenge you find interesting you PM the person who posted the challenge and agree on ramifications (postlength, postlimit, limit for discussion), then you PM me or masked_marsoe (who will be, if I am not mistaken, the referee for the first debate) to find out how it goes from there.

edit: I updated the first post with challenges posted by Colonel Bob, so we only need someone to accept the challenge to try this out.

I pretty much have the same views as Colonel Bob. I'd be happy to take part in this, but I'd rather I didn't go first as I'm not 100% sure of the sort of format this would be in. I'd rather observe a debate or two before challenging anyone or anything.
