I believe I've seen a topic like this before but its kinda old, don't want to revive threads. I was just wondering, what makes a word "bad"? Who makes it bad? If I said ass to one of my friends they would say "Hey, don't say that". Why not?

Profanities are words dictated to be bad by society. Fuck means sex, but the word fuck is frowned upon, the word sex is not. Shit is another word for faeces, but you don't see people taken aback in shock at the word faeces.

Bad words used to be, basically, blasphemous words. I suppose that words like 'fuck' were added in because they were sinful. Whatever the reason, and regardless of whether or not you consider them offensive, you just look like an idiot if you consistently use swear words. Especially if you use them when trying to debate a serious topic.

Well said, but personally I find them acceptable. They can be used to elaborate, or stress upon a point, or even, putting an argument across with more "vigour". :p

No, swear words can be used to force a point, or insult other people's arguments and/or attempt to belittle their opinions. Your normal 'none-profanities' are the words that stress points, or add vigour to an argument.

Indeed. I always feel that when I'm trying to get my point across, or trying to make someone cry, I can always add in a few blasphemous words. It makes me feel better.

[QUOTE=Mr. Matt] Fuck means sex, but the word fuck is frowned upon, the word sex is not. [QUOTE] In context, it more means "have sex with". ie. fuck him, have sex with him.

Essentialy "bad words" and the negative aura they represent should not be viewed the way they are. They say they are bad words to protect the children, but they don't realize that they too will learn and use the "bad words" someday. The line now has gone over the other side to what is wrong and what is right, now words like "crap" are viewed as "bad". I can't comprehend why people try so hard to protect others from "bad language." These words emphasize emotion. Let me ask you this, if someone pissed you off, try retaliating, without using bad words. The best thing you could get out would be something like "stupid head." It's pitiful. So all i can say is "screw you, you language protecting pussies. And stop bleeping words out of my music!"
