Harper bolsters military strength in Arctic : Top Stories : News : Sympatico / MSN Russia plants flag at North Pole to claim Arctic’s riches - INQUIRER.net, Philippine News for Filipinos It seems there is a current race to claim the Arctic and its resources and shipping lanes. Who do you think has the best claim to the Arctic? Being a Canadian, my answer is obvious. It's geographically Canada's; noone else's. A country cannot claim another's land or resources based on it's "geographic right". That's how a lot of wars get started. It's absolute BS that "there's an underwater ridge connecting North Pole to Russia, Denmark, etc." because those ridges exist everywhere, and we're not attempting to claim Greenland or Siberia as rightfully ours. Hell, noone is for admitting Britain to NAFTA just because it is geographically part of North America as opposed to Europe. The Arctic is Canada's; end of story. Discuss.

Split it, why not share? Why should any one country get access to all those resources?

Or alternatively.

The U.S., cause we'll kick your ass for it :)

Whoever can hold it militarily owns it. That's how it used to work.

Russia is being dumb(wierf fo rme to say this considering how much I like and respect thier country)

If you look at it like they are, Then every single country in the world would say the whole world belongs to them because they branch off of your lands(as I said ALL countries would say this because its true to all) But I honestly voted Canada because in my opinion I think it belongs to them(and just voted them in spite of russia..it definatly doesnt belong to the US, we're too far, and Denmark..well same reason as US)

Nukes make a bigger threat than a troop garrison that can, itself, be nuked. Rergardless: "The Antarctic Treaty was signed in 1959 by twelve countries; to date, forty-five countries have signed the treaty. The treaty prohibits military activities and mineral mining, supports scientific research, and protects the continent's ecozone. Ongoing experiments are conducted by more than 4,000 scientists of many nationalities and with different research interests." - Wikipedia Antarctica - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It belongs to Canada, if anybody. It's basically only a little ways north of its major arctic islands, which sometimes fuse together if the water freezes correctly. By Russian logic, if that were true, then the U.S. also owns all of the hemisphere it's in.

lol I feel smart.. I thought you folks were talking about the antarctic.. Bah. Well the Arctic is a barren wasteland and a chunk of relatively useless ice. There's no land underneath it and when (not if) it finally breaks apart and gets some melting going (in the next 200 years) it will be uninhabitable. Russians were there first.. I vote Russia.
