The dark side of Dubai - Johann Hari, Commentators - The Independent

On the surface, Dubai is a booming progressive "Las Vegas of the Middle East". However when you start to scratch the surface, you get a real taste of what lies beneath.

I behoove you all to read this article in its entirety and realize what a monstrous mirage Dubai actually is.

I heard the airport parking lots are full of abandoned cars there, from all the people that left and aren't coming back.

Thanks for the article, Jeffro. Pretty interesting stuff. I always thought of it differently.

Pretty shocking for me, I never even heard of any of that stuff. I read about a third of it so far, I'll finish it right now...but this is just...perverse. It's just a land of hypocrisy. One of the Emiratis says that if it fails, it'll turn into another Iran or Iraq - but IMO it's better to blatantly enslave people than try to hide it behind tall buildings...

Greed and ignorance is a fatal mixture. I don't feel much pity for those stranded expats except for the deceived and rightless foreign workers.

Same comment here as on another forum that this thread ironically showed up on.

It amazes me the number of expats who deny anything bad is happening. To do so would mean they have to face their lack of conscience so they make excuses.

The UN will never get involved as there is too much money and corruption involved.

IIRC when people complained to the German people in 1938 about Hitler the Germans dismissed it and brought up all teh good things he had done like the Autobahn.

IMHO sounds like the working conditions in America in the late 1800's early 1900's. That was why the Unions were able to form, to making working conditions more humane and to insure a fair wage.
