jeffbrakWhat did pope's actually do and why is he such a big figure with Catholics?
The only good I know of that the Catholic church may do is head charities, homeless programs and such. But that is just my guess. :uhm:
Other than that, he makes the most important decisions for the church, and I suppose of Catholocism as a whole, directing the culture if you will.
Großadmiral Dönitzthey had french popes aswell? On tv and in the newspapers here they only talk about there being non-italian popes in the history of the catholic church.
Never trust a dutch newspaper :p... In the time France dominated the Western theatre, they wanted to have control over the pope (and thus, control over the catholic religion). Therefore, they decided to elect their own popes, who weren't accepted by the Italians - who, as I said, hated non-Italian popes - and other countries (f.example England). The French popes, finding Rome too hostile, decided to settle in Avignon. In several periods of our history, there were two popes (during the first crusade, the Hundred Years War,...).
And - as far as I know - the concilium of cardinals has two weeks to elect a new pope.
R.I.P: The Pope Allways remembered
the pope was a great man, someone that catholics looked to as their holy father and that some people of other religions looked to was a spiritual leader and as a source of inspiration. yes....may he rest in peace
May god bless those who belived in the Pope. And to those who did not like him god shall send right down to the firey caves of HELL! I liked the pope. Oh look it is St Peter.
