I know this isn't exactly a serious discussion thread, but I think it is serious enough to warrant being posted here. Plus, it is concerning the Pub and it's inhabitants.

I've come to the conclusion that the Pub and the people here are one of the best things to have ever happened to me. Almost no one else my age has even the weakest grasp of politics or the dimmest view of other countries. To most people even places like Europe are alien worlds. And although I've never actually BEEN to Europe I feel like my time here in the Pub has allowed my political stances and view of the world to mature far beyond most poeple my age.

Very few people my age could say they have had an in depth discussion with people from Canada, Great Britain, Spain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Italy, Russia, Israel, and even China. Very few people my age could say they have had in depth discussions with Republicans, Democrats, Greens, Democratic Socialists, pure Communists, Anarchists, and God knows how many other places on the political spectrum. and speaking of God, very few people my age can say they have had an in depth religious discussion with hardcore Creationists, other Christians, Jews, Muslims, Atheists, Deists, Agnostics, and even, if I am not mistaken, someone of the faith of ancient Egypt.

I mean really, how many people really get a chance like I have had here? A small number of people ever even leave their country, let alone having an indepth discussion with an inhabitant of another one.

Basically, what I am trying to say here is that the Pub has contributed a surprisingly large amount to my political development. Does anyone else here have the same experience?

Cheers mate:)

Considering that some people in these boards like to steer things up, I'm glad someone sees it for what it is. A place were people from different backgrounds and cultures to meet and discuss in a civil way to eachother.

Green for you!

I agree. The discussions here have helped me to formulate my own opinions on issues, and to appreciate other points of view better.

The only thing that could make the Pub better is more diversity in threads. I think it might be neat if we held Pub elections and then formed a sort of mock Pub Congress where we attempt to "run" a country. Something like the geopolitical game except with everyone competing to run one country. Some people would be "parties" and everyone else would simply be voters.

Sounds good, but we'd have to make sure that the thread stays more or less Pub-material, otherwise it might be moved to the Leisure-games forum.

I've got a feeling that Relander would like this as well ;)

Well said there mate, good to see this kind of original topic once in a while here :) From my part I can say that I have got more versatile political perspective, especially when it comes to the United States. I have learned more what people in different countries think about issues and understand different perspectives & reasons better, for example how gun control is really tough issue in the United States or how the Democrats aren't that much better than the Republicans. I could say I have become more conservative due to these boards (for example in the question about abortion) even though I'm still socially permissive. I just hope that during my two years here some people have learned some moderacy and seeing things from more versatile perspective, especially when it comes to politicians & politics, and not to mention differences between European countries and our political views about the US politics. I totally agree with Afterburner about having more diversity in topic subjects and would like to see other people creating topics with original subjects without reservations or fear: it's always better to try than doing nothing.

Precisely :) Idea about having some kind of geopolitical/party game between GF-members sounds good.

I would support this idea. Definitely sounds interesting.
