Let me start off by saying that I was born in Oman and moved to Dubai, UAE until I was 8 (more than half my life). I've been to Damascus, Egypt, and dozens of other Moslem places. Moslems (or muslims) are not terrorists. They are not a religion of hate and intolerance. And, because of all the anti-Moslem sentiment, which sometimes makes me embarassed to be an American, my hope is to set the record straight. There are three types of moslems. First, the Sunnis, second the Shiites, and third the extremists (multiple subcategories). Sunnies and Shiites account for 98% of moslems, extremists for 2%. Most moslems are caring, kind people who are just as good or bad as any cross section of any other culture in the world. The Koran teaches love and tolerance, like the bible, torah, and other monotheistic literature. THe problem with the picture is that the only exposure 99% of Americans have faced with Islam is the extremists. About them: like I said, they are a mere 2%. It happens in all religions. Timothy McVeigh was a Catholic. Benedict Arnold was a converted Anglican. I can't think of a Presbyterian example (my personal faith) but I won't try to defend it because I'm sure there is one. To prove this tolerant Moslem image, look at Spain between 711 and 1469. It was a period of immense tolerance under which the Moslems, the Christians, and the Jews thrived. If Spain ever had a true golden age, it was then (don't get me started about the horrors of the conquistadors and the Inquisition). Those 700 years were the most peaceful Spain ever saw, with the most beautiful architecture and medicinal and literary advances. Don't spout crap about how the Moslems are intolerant, because under them Spain went a very happy 700 years coexisting peacefully, with no revolutions, no civil wars, no internal strife whatsoever. You can't claim that about any other Western country. Then, Ferdinand and Isabella come in, trying to unite Spain under one banner, and not to clout the Catholics, but that's when the trouble and the wars started. Second, you cannot categorize moslems as a whole. They are spread out among countries. I would be like considering people from Maine and Arizona the same people with the same ethics. They might have the same basic nationality, and the same basic morals, but they are not the same people. Certain Moslems in countries are more extremist than others, but not nearly as extremist as we are wanted to believe. And that's a fact. If you have any questions or excuses, post them here (duh!). I will be back to answer as many as possible, but I'm sure I'll be assisted to an extent by level headed fellows such as Darth Sporky.

Rock on. Personally, I think Islam is going through the same kind of adolescent upheaval Christianity went through in the Middle Ages. Unfortunately, maces and arrows are now AK-47s and RPGs. If Islam survives this, and I am sure it will, it will be the better for it.

I can't help but point out that after Mecca didn't accept Muhammed's teachings he left and came back with a posse (if you will) and sieged the city.

But, I agree completely with the post and its intent. Just wanted to cite that fact, and yes I remember the Crusades, well not literally at least :P. I think the analogy of Islam going through the same thing as Christianity in the middle ages is quite an interesting one.
