Keep in mind drug trafficking isn't purely marijuana... and even if it was legalized, drug cartels would be more than happy to supply premium south american strands at a lower price then sold in stores, at the cost of only a few thousand lives.

Honestly, I can't see a perfect solution to this. As long as there is demand for drugs, there will be supply, and demand will never go away. Thankfully, I buy locally... tomatoes, that is ;)

If they sank half the money they do into fighting drugs into making safer, legal alternatives to some of the more interesting drugs, no-one would give pot a passing glance. It's just not a very good product.

Black Marketing will always exist. It can't be stopped. Legalisation would create a legal market, though. In doing this, not only does the Federal government make ridiculous amounts of money on tax (which can only be good, given the deficit you guys have), but it becomes controlled by the FDA, making it a safer substance, and cartels would shrink, as there would be no need for the middle man the cartels pose themselves as. Is there a problem with drug wars over cigarettes? over alcohol? no. Admittedly there'll be an adjustment period (Drug laws are actually good for the prosperity of the cartels), but it'd decline. In any major reform, there's always a difficult adjustment period, this is unavoidable. However, the laws can't stay as it is. Allowing these drug wars is awful, and is certainly more destructive than the substance itself is (especially if the FDA was to have control over it)

Any legal system must eventually realise that its existence relies upon creating crime. Too many people make too much money out of drugs being illegal. The police get their money, the prisons get theirs, the politicians get to talk about crime and the dangers of the world to get themselves elected, the hospitals and drug clinics get to make their money.

It's all very well to say that government would make more money. And as a nation that might be true. But will the politicians? They're the people who make the laws.

I dont think it would be good if it was legal becuase they'll be pricing the weed at such a high price. I could see the price being 100 bucks for a quatour. But im all in favor for it becoming completly decriminalized that any amount you have u cannot get charged for. and I support marc emery. So free marc! :)

What a load of crap. Legalize it and stop alot more crime than it being illegal does now. There is no comparison, there will be less crime if its legal. Cost, dope is over 400$ and ounce on the black market, right now, you guys have to be joking, a packet of cigarettes or an ounce of tobacco ? Legalizing dope would bring the price right down, especially when its in mass production in our own countries, and it would put the tax revenue up. Just how much tax do they make every quarter with tobacco. You guys must be joking. There is NO justifiable reason to have dope illegal. The amount of trees we waste for news papers and toilet paper is redonkulas, hemp could be used for all of that, totally renewable, and stronger and recyclable still. Wake up people, dont listen to the bullshit propaganda about hemp. Legalize it and tax the frek out of it. Why should just tobacco smokers be taxed ?
