I have a friend he's from england, now he's about 56 years of age and told me a story about Reagan and Thatcher had an idea about merging The UK with America, I was stuned and told him i never heard of such a thing, or ever read about something like that, but he was convinced it was true. I didn't know weather to laugh or call him mistaken or at least miss understood some news commentary, anyway has anyone ever heard a plan ornany news like that????thanks, just seems so far fetched!

While that's completely and utterly outside the realm of reason... it would be really really ironic, not to mention very funny if it were true ;).

Heck no!

Just being a United Kingdom is enough for me at the minute. I've never heard anything like this - the closest stories I have heard all relate to Blair being Bush's lapdog.

What would that become then? The Disunited Queendom of the United States of Not-So-Great America and North-Eastern Ireland? Catchy!

Tell your friend to smack his head against the wall. Thatcher started out as pro-EU (which used to be, incidentally, a capitalist venture before the socialists came along and screwed it up) and ended up regretting even that. She wouldn't even consider something so unbelievably drastic. Apart from anything else, parliament wouldn't have allowed it. This is all aside from the fact that the very prospect is preposterous.

Maybe he confused it with a fictional story from Peter Preston, "51st State". Or some people think that this book is based on real events.

Nevertheless, the term "51st State" is just a humorous reference to Canada or the UK (sometimes even for other countries that are affiliated with the US).

No he was quite serious about hearing this back during the Reagan Administration, as for the name maybe the state of england or great britain??? , one of those what if things,he said it would have been an economic reason, when you consider the EU who knows. He did not mention the movie or books, reagan and thatcher?????

Maybe he is serious about hearing it back at that time, but it is actually implausible, just like Mr. Matt said. You will barely find evidence supporting your theory.
