Performing two Google searches from a desktop computer can generate about the same amount of carbon dioxide as boiling a kettle for a cup of tea, according to new research. While millions of people tap into Google without considering the environment, a typical search generates about 7g of CO2 Boiling a kettle generates about 15g. “Google operates huge data centres around the world that consume a great deal of power,” said Alex Wissner-Gross, a Harvard University physicist whose research on the environmental impact of computing is due out soon. “A Google search has a definite environmental impact.”

Revealed: the environmental impact of Google searches - Times Online

Holy shit, when will this Global Warming hysteria end? It's gone well past rationality and now the cult of Global Warming is just grasping at straws.

Immediately after reading this story I went out and did about 50 random Google searches. Just doing my part in destroying the world.

Seems rather strange that a google search is supposed to generate that much CO2.

As for global warming, I'd rather be on the safe side. The worst thing that can happen is that we live in a cleaner world and behave more responsible. Not really sure why that seems to terrify so many people, especially from the US.

That's going too far to support anti-climate change, and I'm an anti-climate change advocate.

Agreed. The CO2 output has to be reduced even if we can only be 99,9% sure that it is also responsible for the climate change. But articles like this one only support the wrong side by making concerned people look dumb.

I normally use Yahoo but I think it's time to switch.

This global warming thing is way overblown. While I do agree we do,do some damage to the Earth... it's minor compared to what nature is doing it normally. Are we to blame for Mar's polar caps melting also?

I think Venus with an average temperature of 737 K (+464 °C) is a better example for the effect of CO2.

It's also a hell of a lot closer to the GIANT BALL OF BURNING GAS we like to call the Sun.
