Culpeper County public school officials have decided to stop assigning a version of Anne Frank's diary, one of the most enduring symbols of the atrocities of the Nazi regime, after a parent complained that the book includes sexually explicit material and homosexual themes
I can understand if parents feel uncomfortable about the book making their kids sad or depressed or something, but for sexual things? God damn.
It happens to be just near the 65th anniversary of the Auschwitz liberation too.
I read the book in something like 6th grade and my parents had no problem with it. Sure the book has a little bit of sexuality, but is it something more than any other girl her age does or goes through? Or sees in a movie? After all this is a true story about a real girl in real life. I can't understand why the school would pull it because of one parents complaint. Small minded idiots afraid of being sued no doubt. I think parents these days are extremley sensetive, overly so. I think its a book every kid going through elemtary school should read, since it is a symbol/record of what the nazis did to the Jews and the rest of the world.
What specifically is in the book that the parent has a problem with?
There is one instance where she has her period and she discribes it, and then another instance where she touches another girls breast and asks if they can kiss.
If I remember right.

There's a part where she hits puberty and comments on her vagina
There are little folds of skin all over the place, you can hardly find it. The little hole underneath is so terribly small that I simply can’t imagine how a man can get in there, let alone how a whole baby can get out!
That's what I'm getting from the articles at least.
I learned about this stuff in 6th grade Health Class. There are too many stupid parents on this planet.
I bet parents like this would have a field day over Of Mice And Men (which has the N-word everywhere, along with every other word, the word "whore" at least 1 time, in addition to numerous other explicit references, and then there's the violence in it)
Huck Finn gets banned from time to time due to people throwing a hissy fit over his use of "".
And Mark Twain had some progressive views on race back then, yet some people simply jump to the conclusion it's racist and in most cases have never read it.

Kinda reminds me of that part in Apocalypse Now when Kurtz says "We train young men to drop bombs on people, but they can't write the word 'fuck' on airplanes because it's 'obscene'."
Also, there's some serious hypocrisy there. Why is it ok to have sex-ed and anatomy/biology class, but it's not ok to have Anne Frank's diary?
