Seriously? I'm talking both candidates here...what does lying about your military record/embellishing it/etc. prove? What does even having a military record prove?

Nothing. You should only be concerned about the candidates ability to lead the country. As he/she is essentially a figurehead, charisma and diplomacy is far more important than military record.

I have moved past events that happened 30 years ago. Kerry was attacked for his war record by the fact that he used it as his main political spearhead, and the attacks on Bush's record were useless sense he was a sitting president.
