Just got about a 10 second flash on the news about a riot in St. Petersburg. As usual, the media didn't say why.

What's the hassle about?

According to a Swedish news site it was a demonstration against Putin, I guess they're getting fed up with him.

There are some demonstrations in Russia against Putin and his government, yesterday there was one in Moscow with a lot of people arrested, today the same thing happened in Petersburg. Apparently the demonstrators were only allowed to gather on a place for a certain time, when they tried to march around the city riot-police tried to disperse them.

The background could be recent changes in election-system which decrease the chances for liberal parties to gain any influence, or one of the many other allegations against Putin (selective justice, corruption and what not).

Putin acts like Cold War was still going on, but people in Russia start to see the true... At last they want the real democracy.

HYPOBOXER;3632562Wonder if its anything to do with this http://news.bbc.co.uk/player/nol/newsid_6550000/newsid_6551700/6551771.stm?bw=bb&mp=wm

Thanks

The US media finally decided that what was happening in Russia was more important than Anna Nicole's baby and Imus.

That chess master Kasparov was detained. He told the world media that Russia was now a fascist state. Said that none of the media in Russia is reporting anything about what is going on. People with internet access will become the news for the people.

This may be irrelevant, but has anyone seen the movie Beyond Borders? Angelina Jolie and Clive Owen are the two central characters, all about aid and refugees and such. Brilliant movie.

Anyways to the point. The last part of the movie focuses on Chechnya, which has been at civil war with Russia for years. Looky.

Ive heard something has been stirring up there again, anyone know?

Chechnya may have had some support from me in the past. When that school full of kids got killed by those rebels, they lost me.

Anyone think there is a real possibility that Putin isn't going to step down from office when his term expires?

Kasparov was released with a fine.

If anyone remembers that school siege in Russia a few years ago, that was done by Chechnyan (spelling?) rebels.

Russia is democratic, but has high crime rate, high drug abuse rate, and isn't really a good place to be at all. There was that issue a while ago where a journalist got shot, and more recently the polonium poisoning in London... Both people were critical of Putin. Both are now dead. If Kasparov continues to be critical of Putin, it wouldn't suprise me too much if he is killed.
