A Telford antiques dealer called in firefighters and police after he unexpectedly discovered several bottles of a poisonous chemical and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in an old desk.

The antiques dealer, of Pave Lane, Newport, called out the emergency services shortly after 1pm on Saturday after finding five bottles of lethal potassium cyanide and 200 bullets and shotgun cartridges in the drawer of a Victorian desk.

Telford police cordoned off the area and a chemical incident unit from Telford were alerted to the discovery at 1.16pm on Saturday.

A spokesman for Shropshire Fire Service said Newport fire crews had dealt with the incident after the chemicals were not deemed a public danger.
