I'm a biology major... so I thought I'd try and teach you guys something, while amusing myself in the process.

Today's lesson:

ARTHROPODS Phylum Arthropoda -----Class Arachnida ~75000 species ----------spiders, ticks, whip scorpions, mites ----------cephalothorax (prosoma) ---------------chelicerae - fangs in spiders ---------------pedipalps - head appendages --------------------chelate - opposable thumb --------------------unchelate - not branched

SPIDERS -open circulatory system -book lung in the abdomen (opisthosoma)

egg-->nymph--(molt)-->adult

-can be kleptoparasites (steal from other spiders) -no antennae

Black Widow -red hourglass symbol on underside -inject neurotoxin ---swollen lymph nodes ---abdomen spasms ---difficulty breathing -outdoor spider

Brown Recluse -hemolytic venom ---burning sensation ---dry lesion, slow to heal -not agressive -indoor spider

Crab Spiders -harmless

Jumping Spiders -hair, stout, and omgz they jump!

Club/Yellow Spiders -crevasses of walls -can bite

Fishing Spider -medium to small -go underwater to look for food

SCORPIONS -tolerate high temperatures -very territorial

MITES - 32000 species -decomposers -mites are good! -not generally predatory or parasitic

TICKS American Dog Tick - Dermacentor variablis -Rocky Mountain Spoted Fevere ---blotchyness and fever ---caused by bacteria ---not usually lethal

Deer Tick - Ixoides dammini -Lyme disease ---bullseye rash ---caused by bacteria ---can cause arthritis ---irregular heartbeat ---memory loss

---------------------------------

Feel free to contribute your awesome biology knowledge! I'll have new lesson later. And yes... my notes are incredibly impossible to follow

I love biology. I cry when I don't have a biology course. That won't be a problem anymore though

I killed a scary looking spider the other day. I tried identifying it online, but I couldn't find anything that matched. I thought it might have been a brown recluse, but they don't live around these parts. It was indoors, had no web, long hairless burgundy legs, brown tear-drop shaped body with some lighter markings. Never seen one like it before. Maybe it hitchhiked a ride on some produce? Oh yeah, it rained for the next three days after I killed it. :(

When in doubt, gas it!

Brown recluse spiders have a very distinctive violin-shaped pattern on their back. You'd likely be able to easily identify it... unless you smashed it real bad :p

See the violin? :p

Ugh! Way too close up! The spider I killed had the same body shape, but the legs appeared hairless, and they were a dark glossy burgundy color. No violin on it's back but some lighter bars on the back bulbous part (thorax/abdomen?).

When in doubt, gas it!
