One of these days people are going to figure out that when I say I trust them I mean they're easy to predict.

If you find reality stranger than fiction, maybe you're watching the wrong porn.

Rule#10: Everybody lies. Trust no one.

Don't give them the benefit of the doubt. Don't conflate lying with predictability. Actively assume that everybody is working against you, for their own interests, and that they will throw you under a bus at a moment's notice.

Assume that everybody is trying to kill you.

Then build yourself up to an imposing degree, inform them of your assumption, and be amused.

Then kill them first.

Yes, you're right. And while I'm out for my interests I'm not out to screw you over... I'm just... out for my interests, you know? I'm out for my happiness and dreams - and that doesn't have to be a bad thing for you.

Heck, even society is built on a certain degree of trust. Every time I go driving, maybe I decide to kill someone. But most of us don't most of the time, for one reason or another, and so we can have motorways and long distance commuting. We hand over money and we trust that we're going to get the drugs shopping. And thus we can have networked economies.

And if that goes away then everyone loses. The ability to see that, a base level of intelligence and - of course - not being crazy, goes a long way towards stabilising things out.

Heck, even putting that aside - there's a certain motivation to help people out in iterative games, because if you're generally known as a person who repays favours and is useful to have around?... that's a good thing. People notice that you're good for their interests so they tend to be more willing to help you with yours. One of the biggest career mistakes I see people make is to arrive in a company and immediately start asking people for stuff: They get it at first... and then they just do nothing with those relationships -- and maybe that lasts them a couple of goes around the block but eventually the favours stop coming and it becomes pretty much impossible for them to get anything done because they've never invested in actually being part of the organisation.

Difficulty is that trust, at least in the positive love each other and get along sense, only lives within systems that enforce - to a reasonably high degree - reasonable redress for grievance. Because you are right. You can't trust anyone absolutely - there's always the chance you're dealing with that 1/whatever that never repays favours and will screw you over if they possibly can. If there's not something within a system that addresses defectors; parasites against the common good; then the common good does not go well....

Neither extreme works well.

If you didn't trust anyone you'd be incapable of doing anything. "Will that guy try to kill me or find out whether yogurt tastes good through his arsehole? Could go either way!" ;)

And if you trust everyone without exception, or trust too quickly without any balance to the relationships you form, then you end up getting screwed.

Perhaps, but I find reality stranger than fiction.

Reciprocity is how people generally work. Be that one guy who no one wants to get rid of, and you'll be fine. You might have trouble being the person NO ONE wants to see go, as helping one person might be hurting another (at least in their mind), but if you figure out how to do that, you'll be golden.

--------------------

I've attended motivational courses before, and generally haven't thought much of them. They're all gooey and nice and... soft. People don't need any more shit to put them to sleep.

You can go a long way on anger and hatred when you don't have anything else left. Getting fucked off at another wasted day so that you'll do something even if the output is a piece of shit, because it's still something you can rub in life's smug little face.    No, fuck you. Yeah, I'll put up with those people I detest, I'll work with them and be fucking fucked off while I'm doing it but fuck. you.   Maybe the key to motivation is to hate existence more than it hates you for existing. Look life square in the eyes and give that bitch a new scar.
