In all actuality, I do not like Christmas. Not only because I'm bitter that nobody ever gets me anything anymore, or that it's a holiday based on religion, but it's mostly the selfishness and sheer stupidity that is revealed during this time of year.

Actually (I think) Christmas originated to celebrate the birth of Jesus, so in essence, Ryojin is correct, it is based on Religion.

It is society Totes that has changed all of that. Christmas should be about Religion, but society has changed so much, that it isn't. Heck, people (especially many children) think that Christmas is merely about 'getting presents' these days. The whole Religious aspect of it is failing on us.

The celebration of Christmas evolved to include religious aspects such as Jesus' birth. Originally, "Christmas" was the celebration of the "rebirth of the sun", the Roman Saturnalia. Held on December 25th, the winter solstice, when the days began to lengthen and the Earth began it's regular yearly "return" towards the sun. Fitting, because at the time, the Cult of the Sun was particularly strong in Rome.

Nowhere in scripture are we told the date of Jesus' birth, or to celebrate it. Christmas is, if anything, a pagan holiday. Not a religious one.
