I'm having major difficulties getting some things right for my build your own hero Dota type game. I'm trying to use the goblin tinker's upgrade ability to upgrade some base powers. I don't like the way the hero builder arena's have all your powers at the beggining and they all level up every so many levels. And I also dont like the way the Great Strategy has you run back to base to buy the powerups for your abilities. If I can figure this way out. It will be just like having your hero programmed in, so you can still assign skill points the way you want, without having to run back and buy things. I'll lay things out so there's no confusion. - The item is a proxy item that does nothing and is removed the second its bought. - The hero has four skills names skill 1, skill 2, skill 3, and skill 4. - When the hero buys the proxy item for lets say chain lightning, it sets off a trigger that gives him the upgrade ability that upgrades skill 1 into chain lightning. The only problem is when I test the map and buy the item the game craps out and gives me an error message. Does anyone know how to get around this?
Okay so it might seem a little odd to write yourself a reply, but here it goes. I thought this would be easier then starting a new thread. Since that way didnt work, and I couldn't find anyone who knew a better way, I tried something else. I tried giving the heros spellbooks with spells for the different abilities. Just so theres no confusion here it goes.
- When the hero is created I give him four abilities via a trigger. They are each a spell book. The first one is a spell book for slot 1 and so forth. - When the hero clicks on an ability for example storm bolt. He is then given the upgrade so his slot 1 turns into storm bolt. - As each slot is selected i have a trigger that removes the corresponding spellbook. This works like a charm with the only exception that i can't fit all the hero abilities in. Because it actually shows the engineering upgrades where the abilities should be for the hero. So my question is...Does anyone know either a way to make a ability thats been given to a unit via a trigger to not show up on same set of buttons as the move command, or a way to make a unit effected by a ability like an engineering upgrade all game long without actually giving it to the unit?
not that strange to reply to yourself,
John117not that strange to reply to yourself,
Yeah I know, its pretty easy to get used too
Its nice to know that I'm not the only one who talks to himself. So I've still been trying different things, and I have yet another half baked solution to my own dilema. I'm giving the heros items with the upgrades in the items. The only problem is that if I make an item for each of the four skills that leaves them only two slots. Does anyone know of a way to give a hero more slots (I've tried and can't get around the 6 max.) or perhaps make a lackey that would act as another four inventory slots?
Thanks for putting up with my endless nagging.
