:uhm:Hi Folk's!! I'm about to finally get 'Broadband',(livin' up here in the stick's it's taken some time!)... I've been told that an 'Internal' Modem is a lot better for online gaming although it may work my Processor a bit harder!,any views on this and if so,can anyone recommend 'which' modem to go for,(at a reasonable price)?...I'm running an ATHLON 1800XP. Cheers! :)

I dont know who gave you that advice, but its all wrong. an EXTERNAL modem is better for online gaming. Internal modems will use prosesser and memory from the main system, slowing down the games responce time and FPS, where as an External one has its own prosesser and memory and therefore allows your game to have more "ummf"

I reccomend a standard external ADSL modem, costing about 80-90 UK pounds.

As far as im aware, the best MODEM to go for isn't a modem at all. From what i know a MODEM and broadband use completely different ideas to get the same thing. Broadband services are not done by MODEMs (definitely not routers, like mine)

Thats not true. They have DSL modems over here. They use broadband, too. I recommend a Siemens GigaSet. Its wireless and very fast. Thats what i'm using.

They may be called MODEMs, but i am a very good friend of someone who runs tech support at a P.C maintenance company! if your wondering why i use caps for MODEM its because its an acronym (dont quote me on spelling)

Yes Thats Right, Modulator Demodulator.

An external modem is probably the best option.

If you have ethernet capability in you're pc then if possible get an ethernet modem.

I have a USB MODEM, Which works fine for me, Though USB is processor intensive meaning it takes extra power from you're machine and CPU, Having said that though my USB MODEM has not slowed down my computer to any point that I can notice anyways, It workes just fine for me.

And with regards to not needing a MODEM, Yes you do, If you are on cable or something then you're cable box acts as a modem, They send you the connection through the spare bandwidth that one of the channels would normaly occupy.

Yes I see you're point, However if you did not have a box you would need a MODEM.

Cable and ADSL are both internet connections But work differently, Similarly But still differently and you need something to allow you're pc to connect.
