ok guys, technical wizards,
i have a spare PC lying around here and was thinking about putting up a server.
brief specs are:
cable internet connection @ 1.5 mbps.
60 gig HD
512. RAM (can be expanded)
2600+ AMD ATHLON processor
128mb graphics (it's a geForce i think).
this is my spare PC. it is switched off next to my uber PC. can i use it as a server? it would be 'always on'.
thoughts? guidance? help?
AzH - Sadly with a 1.5 meg connection u can host maybe 4- 5 players on the server - wont be able to handle much due to the connection speed you have :(
sorry buddy
i thought that would be an issue, but it doesn't get much faster over here.
ya - i ran a RTCW server once with 8 people Lmao on a 3 meg cable ran semi ok - id imagine if u had a 3 meg connection - u could host around 8 players fairly good - seeing how WW doesnt eat up as much bandwidth as RTCW
It's your upload speed you really need to look at. I'm on nearly 400k upload but 4 meg download. The machine itself would run a decent server, i'd suggest running Linux o/s rather than a windows o/s. Who's your provider? When I ran a server for the EL's it would take about 8-10 players, that was on a 1 meg connection, anything above that and it started to struggle.
the max connection i have seen is 2 meg. i'll do some shopping.
Angel-EyesWho's your provider?
NTL.
Do you have Telewest in your neck of the woods?
ya angel i was referring to upload speeds lol - my connection is 3.5 meg up and down
this is where our providers fall foul over here. You can get whacking big downloads, 1 gig etc, but the upload speeds are crap. :(
