Are there any companies which you can pay to run a server? Like, give you admin access to your folders and set how much bandwidth you can consume etc... I'm not loaded with $, but could it be more than $50 a month? I know that's quite low, but Internet companies must be desperate nowadays.

Hey Gringo,

Yup, you can indeed rent servers, as for the cost, I suspect it may vary quite a bit.

I presume you will be looking for a server in the US ?

I found this company: http://www.gdn.net/entertainment/game_server_public.htm this page is for public servers, but if you want a private one, it is slightly cheaper: http://www.gdn.net/entertainment/game_server_private.htm You can rent a 12 player private server for $47 p/month.

It will almost definatly be worth shopping around though, if you are serious :)

Yeah I think GDN is pretty cheap. There's also Fragism. Do me a favor Hewster, run 1000 - 256 byte pings to following addresses and let me know the average response time.

Fragism Server in Jersey City NJ (real close for me!!) ping 64.237.35.73 -n 1000 -l 256

GDN (NY) ping hammer.gdn.net -n 1000 -l 256

Since a lot of players are from Europe, it makes sense for someone to test it. And yes I'm serious about doing it. I'm thinking 12 player public, and bumping it up to 16 depending on whether it gets crowded.

Nah, that's good. We have a winna! Now I just have to find out if I can set the sv_maxrate to 25000, to really take advantage of everyone's broadband.
