Is BF1942 playable on a 56k? I usually get connected at 38kbs. Will it be unplayable , or is it ok on the right server?

38kb/s Ouch man. Things will start to get quite laggy, very quickly. If you connect to a fast server without a large player capacity (32 or below) which is in your country, you might be able to get an alright game although you will experience lagginess throughout the game.

yes, you can play with 56k, Id suggest 16 player servers, no more, and you should be able to have a good time with limited amount of lag depending on how good the server is

It's definately doable.

One of my friends has dialup, and he does ok. We let him pick the best server based on his latency then we use Xfire to join.
