infact that iwo jima flag raising your speaking of was the second one, it happened like a week after iwo jima was taken, the first one was less dramatic, the first one was a much smaller flag
As a former Marine I am quite versed in the myth and truth about the flag-raising on Mt Suribachi. The original flag was wanted by the brass (the Secretary of the Navy (Forrestal) was in attendance). A flag was appropriated from an LST and was sent up later in fact that day (Feb 23, 1945). There was one flag-raising, two flags...the second flag was a replacement...therefore the "official or government" term is one flag-rasing. Joe Roesenthal, who took the iconic photo, was lucky he later said to have the right settings on his camera...And No the photo was Not Staged as some have suggested. Heck the photographers were ducking after they shot their photo's and motion picture footage.
