You can tell us what you need in the mean time, even though Apoc is THE comp-info master. Maybe we can actually help! :)

i think that im going to buy a new case(an alienware style one), a new motherboard, and a new processor(AMD). the processor will most likely be a 2700+ - 3200+.

SniperWolfenZab, PM Apoc or PITA and ask. But I think I saw where the AMD64 is supposed to be twice as fast with the processing part, therefore twice as fast for gaming. But ask Apoc.

Hi guys,

Keep in mind there are two flavours of 64bit Athlon, the 700 odd pin Athlon64 3200+ and the 900 odd pin Athlon64 FX51. The difference is in the memory controller. The 3200+ uses a 64bit memory copntroller and the FX51 uses a 128bit mem controller. In games they will both leave the regular P4's in the dust, but only the FX51 leaves the new P4 EE (which is actually a rebadged Xeon - the cheaters) for dead.

The FX51 actually runs at 2200 Mhz (but this will ramp up as the 90nm fab comes on line), so in terms of applications that do a lot of small calcs in cache they don't tend to be a good runner (things like Spreadsheets and other office productivity apps where pure clock speed is a big advantage) but once out of that small niche the 64's are a winner.

Games seem to be the AMD64's strong point, in some games the Athlon 64 FX51 is more than twice as fast as the fastest regular P4, if you can afford it get the FX version, I am already saving my hard earned dollars

As for the vid card issue, the ATI's are better at the moment, and I hate to admit this cause I have always been a Nvidia buyer, I currently have a FX5600, but I never buy bleeding edge, can't afford the bleeding money  In the bargain area Nvidia are better value than ATI at the moment, ATI don't have a mid-priced vid card that supports DX9 yet. I would only get a Quadro if I was using it to earn money, gaming cards they are not, they are aimed specifically at 3D modelling and have optimisations tuned for that market which makes them not so good at games.

And somebody mentioned DELL!?! These computeres, and others (HP, IBM, Compaq) are fine, until something goes wrong with them, then you find that the only place to buy that floppy that fits that funny shaped case is from DELL (or IBM, HP, Compaq etc - and that's an example only, subsitute CDROM or PSU or etc). I know cause I fix computers, and ppl call us cause many of the local computer shops won't accept brand name PC's like DELL etc cause they have to spend twice as much and wait up to 4 weeks to get parts delivered from 5,000 klms away and they can't get the money turning over. Also you pay a price premium, I recently put together a $3000AU computer together for a customer which would have cost $3500AU for an identical specced system from DELL. You will get it cheaper if you shop around and build it yourself, there's no doubt about that.

have fun guys

Personally, I've been an AMD Fan since the beginning. My dad was an intel man until I got him to try an AMD.So as for which to buy, of course I'm gonna say stick with AMD. And Apoc isn't the only 'puter tech on here.

Very true Hellgramite_IV,

There are other knowledgable ppl here, however I have been here a looonng time so more ppl probably know me. The Athlon64 is gonna knock Intel for hoop, they are already trying sneaky stuff like rebadging Xeon's to compete.

Intel are behaving like Bill Gates when he said "nobody will ever need more than 640k memory" in 1982. They are currently jumping up and down saying "no one needs 64bit CPU's" I'm sure they are gonna get a big surprise.

have fun all
