I thought I saw a potential fix earlier, but lost the ethread.

I connect immediately to servers, but gosh, it takes a couple minutes almost to load a map - I want this to be quicker, and I really dont want to spend money on more ram if i dont have to.

Anyway, my specs are 256 ram, PII 850mHz system AMD Athlon, etc.

I tried disabling write-behind caching, but the game wouldnt load at all, so I enabled it again.

Any help or direction is appreciated.

Hi Korben,

I'm afraid these two are mutually exclusive.

PII 850mHz system AMD Athlon

More ram will help. I have a Athlon XP2000+ with 256 Mb DDR and I am usually one of the last to join when map switching, all the damn tanks and planes are already gone dammitt!!!!!

However once a level is loaded (ie: next game on same map) I join just as quick as the other players. Upgrading to 512 makes a BIG difference (have borrowed some to test it out).

Also what sort of HDD are you running, if it is an old HDD it may also be causing some slowdowns.

Apart from that there's not a lot I can offer you.

Sorry Korben,

I'm a tech freak, I mean't Hard Disk Drive

A really old ATA 66 (or even ATA 33) HDD can make a lot of difference to how fast games and levels load. I run a 60Gb 7200rpm ATA 133 HDD and it rocks, but if you have an older HDD (say a 15 or 20GB 5400rpm) then it will make a big difference.

I was having to endure long load times too, and I have the exact same specs as apocalypse_kid (Athlon XP2000, 256mb DDR), but after reading this thread, I decided to run out an buy another 256. It made a huge difference. All the games I played in yesterday, I was usually the first person in the map.

Have you ever noticed, the more you love a game, the more your wife/girlfriend hates it? :spank:

RAM RAM AND MORE RAM.. I have 640 SDRAM and I am usually one of the first in the game.. I rarely get in before the game starts... I am going to have 1 gig within the month hehe I will let you know what it is like then.. heheh I like DDR ram.. but it is sooo expensive.. so I use SDRAM so I can get more ram. 1 gig SDRam is better than 512 DDR ram.. and costs less lol..
