I was looking around in my book on twentieth century artillery and i came across the 914mm 'little david' mortar. My jaw dropped, and for obvious reasons. Heres a quote from a web site:

The War Department this week revealed details of the giant 914MM (36 1/4-inch) mobile mortar, the largest and most destructive weapon of its kind, capable of hurling a 3,650-pound projectile a distance of six miles. Dubbed "Little David," the giant mortar has a rifled, 22-foot, muzzle-loading tube which, with its firing mechanism and other parts making up the tube assembly, weighs approximately 80,000 pounds. The mortar's base assembly, on which the tube rests, is constructed like a huge box and weighs 93,000 pounds. While traveling, the mortar's tube and base assemblies each make up separate tractor loads. A complete "Little David" unit also includes a bulldozer and crane with bucket shovel to dig the emplacement. The huge mortar can be emplaced in 12 hours, while the largest (820MM) known German artillery weapons were hauled on 25 railway cars and required three weeks to put in firing position.

I was unable to locate an image. Heres what my book says:

Testing aerial bombs for penetration is best by firing them out of a specially built gun, so that you know where the bomb is going to go; dropping is a chancy business. The US army had such a gun for bomb-testing during World War II and it occurred tosomebody that it would make an excellent siege mortar forhammering the Japanese defences expected when Japan was invaded. 'Little David' was the result, a muzzle loading mortar firing a huge denolition bomb. The mounting was no more than a big steel box dug into the ground, and the barrel was lowered, the cartridge put in, the shell fitted into place. The war ended before it could be perfected, and no more than the one trial model was ever built.
