oh if this helps u any chaos

this is for 3dsmax4

load one model u like. save with a new name for it. delete all hardpoints and damage points from it save again. now select the part or parts from it u want. save to yet another name now import another model. when it says would u like to replace scene click no.it will load the model with the other parts from the previous model still there. delete the hard points and damage points again and save to one of the previous names. now u have 2 models u ca do what u want with. say u want to add different nacelles. delete one set and move them together to the other model. but first and sorry for going out of order. put all the model files into one file. really sorry for forgetting that. but that should help with modifying ur ships. let me know how it goes for u.

u'll love this already have it in .zip file just havent opened it yet. lol i have possibly 30 or more downloaded files for sfc3. been working on models and haven't had much time to go through all my downloads. mostly converting models from other games such as homeworld. which im suprised i havent seen anyone else mentioning it. of course it requires an addittional program.right hemisphere's deep exploration which u can get a free demo from . thats what i've been using . still have a couple days left before that runs out. too bad im not a hacker. love to buy it cant afford it. got very lucky with getting 3dsmax4.($35) u.s. dollars at a yard sale.heres an example of my texturing hope u like
