What would the best character be to use for my first?

Be specific, and explain your reasoning.

that depends on what you want to do and as for starting out i would try all classes and then go with the one you like. though personaly i like mages and locks in the beginning just beacuse they are less gear depeant. warriors and pallys not so much bevuase they rely mostly all on gear. durid is also a good bet or shammie though i never got one past 14. so i say just try them all untill you find one that you like and lvl him up

I would basically agree with the above. If you can't decide on a class from the descriptions at the WoW website, roll a few classes, or them all, and see what you like best.

Hunters are one of the quickest to level, you can use a pet at level 10. They kill things very quick.

I found the Warlock to be better than the Hunter for leveling, and their pet comes at LvL 4. ;) But the best overall class for leveling, questing and grinding though, imo, is the Rogue. Check out http://worldofwarcraft.com for infor on classes.

Don't take the easiest class, take one which will be still interesting later on in the game.

Look for a class with some kind of healing-ability. That helps in all kinds of situations.

MesmerThe Mesmer is a potent manipulator and can be an annoyance like no other. The profession specializes not in directly inflicting damage upon its foes, but rather decrease their effectiveness in battle. They are an excellent support profession, as they can almost completely eliminate the threat from certain characters, if used wisely. One of their great advantages over other spellcasters is their fast casting attribute. It allows them to decrease the casting time of their skills, an issue that can be of dire consequence when in thick of battle. This ability allows them to be an excellent primary profession, yet often utilizing the skills of their secondary.

That sounds like shaman to me... the phrase 'Support Class' caught my eye.

Here's the link to the shaman on the WoW website.

Hope this helps.
