Easter Island is a triangle of volcanic rock in the South Pacific. It is one of the most isolated places on Earth, with over 2,000 miles from the nearest population center (Chile and Tahiti).
The island is best known for the giant stone monoliths, known as Moai, that dot the coastline. The Admiral Roggeveen, who came upon the island on Easter Day in 1722, named it Easter Island. Chile claimed the island In 1888 for its agricultural potential and strategic possibilities as a naval station.

In April 1945 Chile swore their allegiance to the Allies and declared war upon Japan. Easter Island was a likely target for attack by Japan, since the island is a strategic location in the South Pacific. However, Japan surrendered in August 1945 and the attack on Easter Island never came. This map is about a battle between Japan and the Allies that could have happened.
