File Description
Ah, Version 2.0 of my very first skin. A bunch of tweaks for this one from the original file. All the decals have been resized to make the skin more accurate, and to get around the annoying clipping problem on the right side. All the panel lines have now been de-chromed, making them more visible when you're up close (see panel_lines.jpg). The colors have been altered, and the chrome has been toned down. Chrome has been removed from the decals, improving their look a bit. Other than that it's the same old beloved Korean War Hero. Oh yeah - in case you didn't figure it out by the use of the word "chrome" several times in the past few sentences, you need to turn environment maps on to get the full effect. Mmm... shiny.

Dedication
~~~~~~~~~~
This skin is dedicated to Joseph O. Tobul, former owner of the original Korean War Hero.  Joe and his son, Jim, purchased the plane in 1981 and began a ten-year restoration process, calling on many of the plane's former pilots for assistance.  When restoration was completed, the plane quickly became known as one of the best and most accurate Corsair restorations in the world.  Sadly, Joe and his plane were both lost in an accident in November 2002.  During a flight to honor war veterans in South Carolina, Joe's engine failed suddenly.  Realizing he couldn't reach the landing strip, Joe turned away from the landing site to avoid crashing into a cluster of houses nearby.  The plane instead crashed into a nearby forest.  Joe died in the crash and subsequent fire.
Inaccuracies
~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are still a few things that don't accurately reflect the original - here's my excuses for them.

--The canopy can't be chromed, so it doesn't quite match the rest of the skin. However, it's only noticeable when you're standing right next to it and looking for it; it's definitely not noticeable in the air or from an average distance on the ground.

--The skin mirroring reverses the JT on the tail, and causes problems with the wings; the right wing on the original had 416JT on it, while the left wing had the navy star logo. To solve the problem I just did the navy star on both wings.

--The decals are kinda pixelated up close, because the photos I took them from weren't the best quality; if anyone can find some nice, large, preferably flat shots of the original plane, I'd appreciate them letting me know. And I'd give them credit in the readme for the next version.

--The game's Corsair mesh does not accurately reflect an F4U-4, so the original plane looked fatter and stubbier than this one.

--The plane's logo (the eagle near the nose) could not be placed in the proper position due to a problem with the mesh - there's a raised area there on either side that totally butchers anything you try to place there. Instead I placed it lower, closer to the wing.

All of these can't really be changed, so this is the best I can do. BUT: if you see anything that you think should be changed, PLEASE e-mail me or post a comment.

Installation
~~~~~~~~~~~~
To install this skin, you'll need the RFA extractor or the Merciless Creations TexturePack addon.  I recommend the Merciless addon; it creates a folder with subfolders for each map, and all you need to do is click and drag to install your skins.  It also adds support for their TexturePacks, which are collections of skins that re-skin an entire level for historical accuracy and better graphics overall.  Both can be found at www.bf1942files.com, which you're probably at already.
I never could get the skins to work using the RFA extractor, and I don't want to send out misinformation, so I'll just tell you how to use the TexturePack addon.  It's an installer file, so getting it set up is pretty easy.  Once it's installed, there will be a folder titled "TextureSets."  Click that, then click BF1942.  You'll have folders for all the maps.  Copy and paste (or click and drag) the skin into all the Pacific folders, and you're good to go.
