File Description: - This pack replaces the default Corsair skins on all 5 Pacific maps with more historic skins.
Historic Notes: - The first F4U-1 Corsair used in battle was delivered on July 31, 1942, and was used by the USMC as an "island hopper", due to the Navy turning it down for various problems encountered while performing carrier landings. It wasn't until 1944 that the Navy adopted the Corsair for carrier landings (after the British perfected the landing method, and new revisions produced the F4U-1A for carrier-based service). The main carrier planes up to that date were the F3F and F4F Wildcats, which fought at Wake Island, Midway, and the Coral Sea. I have simply skinned the Corsair as a Wildcat would have looked during these battles. The only 2 historic Corsair skins in this pack would be the Guadal Canal and Iwo Jima skins.
Maps and Planes: - Wake Island: F4F-3 skin of VMF-211, December 1941 (12 new F4F-3's...the only planes Wake had...were delivered the day before the attack by the USS Enterprise...which is why is was not at Pearl Harbor during that attack. Of the 12 planes, several were not even equiped with working guns and radios yet)
- Coral Sea: F4F-3A skin of VF-2, USS Lexington, May 1942
- Battle of Midway: F4F-3 skin of VMF-221, June 1942 (this was the land-based USMC unit on Midway which fought the first wave...the airfield should NOT be neutral at the beginning of the battle)
- Guadal Canal: VMF-124, Febuary 1943 (the first Corsairs to arrive at Guadal Canal)
- Iwo Jima: VF-84, USS Bunker Hill, 1945
